In 2009, the Municipal Outreach project held Major Urban Poverty Challenges Identification (MUPCI) workshops in the eight municipalities covered by the project. The findings from these workshops were published in the Supplement to the South Africa Survey 2008/09. Following this successful venture, between July and September 2010 the project team will embark on another set of workshops: the joint Urban Poverty Intervention (UPI) and Anti Poverty Intervention Implementation (APII) workshops.
The Municipal Outreach Project is co-funded by the South African Institute of Race Relations, the European Union, and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty. Operated by the Institute, the project aims to assist municipalities to alleviate poverty by determining poverty challenges, compiling best policy interventions, and formulating appropriate implementation strategies.
The project entitles its beneficiaries, which include approximately 1 800 elected councilors, local government officials, and other stakeholders, to a wide rage of publications. These include a weekly newsletter, a monthly Fast Facts For Local Government, the annual South Africa Survey, and a Supplement to the South Africa Survey.
In 2009, the MUPCI workshops were held at the eight municipalities covered by the project: Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municiaplity, Motheo District Municipality, City of Ekurhuleni, City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, Capricorn District Municipality, and the City of Cape Town.
The findings from the workshop, together with the Institute’s research findings were subsequently published in the Supplement to the South Africa Survey 2008/09.
Between July and September 2010, the project team will host joint Urban Poverty Interventions (UPI) and Anti Poverty Intervention Implementation (APII) workshops. In these participatory workshops, the project team will facilitate the identification of best practices and implementation strategies. Participants will be required to formulate municipal specific best practices to overcome the challenges they identified during the MUPCI workshops. They will also have to devise strategies for implementing these best practices.
The results of the workshops will be published by the end of this year.
The elected councillors and local government officials in the respective municipalities, as well as other stakeholders, are encouraged to attend.
Invitations to the workshop will be sent out soon. Be sure to book your place!
